Tantallon South Civic Association meeting is held 8:00pm on the 2nd Thursday of each month at the Potomac Landing Elementary School.

I have on numerous occasions warned of speed in the community. I cannot say that enough. The police have also tried to control speed both on Swann Creek and some other local roads, yet the problem continues. There was a serious accident on Memorial Day on Swann Creek, with one fatality of one of our residents. I do not have the details, but I do urge you to exercise extreme caution in the community and elsewhere we drive.

By now, I am sure you have heard about the County pulling the funds for the Police Station in the community. I am trying to understand the logic behind this move. The funds have been in the books since 2001, and you waited until 2009 to remove it? Other surrounding jurisdictions during the same period have seen an increase in their population just like Prince Georges County, and have increased their police force. Our level of force has not grown to reflect the population growth.

Home invasion and other crimes have increased, yes, South County and our community has also witnessed these increases. We do not like what we are seeing. We want a change. I repeat we want a change; I have nothing but praise for the officers doing their best with limited resources.

Our residents should not be fearful for their safety or worried about their belongings. Police should be able to respond to our needs in a timely manner, we will like to know the culprits are apprehended and fully prosecuted under the law.

A suspect is now in custody pertaining to the burglary of my residence. Yes, he’s from the community. I do not know him, but he’s yet to name his accomplices. If you have any question about your property or any problem of home invasion call Detective S. Hampton #1735 at the Dist. 4 station in Oxon Hill (301) 749-5064. It’s time to fight back.

I urge you to continue your vigilance in the community. Call the police once you notice any suspicious activity. We are only as safe as our level of commitment and vigilance. I wish you well. Have a safe summer. Thank you.
