MINUTES of Tantallon South Civic Association

Meeting date: March 11, 2010

Call to order: A meeting of the Tantallon South Civic Association held in the library of the Potomac Landing Elementary School on March 11, 2010. The meeting convened at 7:45 p.m. President Tara Scott, presiding.

Members in Attendance      

Visitors in Attendance:  Council Member Tony Knotts, Corporal Blanchard (District IV),  Ms. Lynette Washington (Census Bureau)

Proceedings:

  • Welcome/Introductions Tara called the meeting to order, welcomed everyone and introduced guests. 
  • Reports:  Due to time constraints and information presented by guest executive board reports were not given.
  • Speakers

Corporal Blanchard- gave crime reports for John 4 Beat which covers Old Fort Road to Charles County line.  There were 2 assaults (1 assault w/arrest); 1 vandalism; 1 break-in; 9 thefts from auto; 3 auto thefts (1 recovered stolen vehicle), and 7 thefts from property.

Non-emergency number was given out 301-333-4000. 

Presented when getting gas safety recommendations (don’t leave purse in car -lock your doors-don’t pull into a station if you see an incident has occurred- drive off if you see that someone is following you-take precautions & look out for things.  Other recommendations (if you wake in the middle of the night look out your windows and scan your property and your neighbor’s property-don’t place articles in your trunk at the destination-take precautions and look out for things).

Council Member Knotts – District VII Police Station and the importance of making an impact during the Budget Hearing Process to be held in May (his office will let us know when it comes before the board).  School budget cuts and why new schools weren’t being built in the southern area due to capacity.  Oxon Hill High School is proposed to be built and completed by 2012 while adding rooms onto Avalon Elementary and Oxon Hill Middle.    The Sports and Tech Center on Bock Road is slated to open in 2010.  Programs in the county are Team Builders-trade program for 18 years & older held at Prince George’s Community College. Safe Summer Program-countywide summer youth program.  District 8 Day held in August raises money through nonprofit agency and has given $230,000 worth of scholarships to students in District 8.   Working on the concept of building a medical mall facility to be built in Landover; however, County Executive is not interested in Park and Planning building the medical mall facility.   There are major projects being built in the county and Miranda Jackson is tracking Prince George’s County residents businesses to work these projects.  Also wants to build infrastructure around metro stations. 

Ms. Lynette Washington- Importance of the 2010 Census being completed

and mailed in by April 1.  In 2000, 65% of the residents in the county completed and the allocated funds per household is about $4,000.   Census determines the money and representation.  The numbers are counted in mid 2011.  Political and money affects will occur in 2012. 

  • Announcements:

CPR class (non certified) scheduled for April 8th meeting-Sign up sheet was distributed.   Regular meeting will not be held in April due to the CPR Training.
